Glory here is not applause. It is the radiance of a line of people who kept their fire through everything, and the way that light stands on your shoulders when you walk into a room. The Nkembo tee carries the flame of glory: a compact three-tongued fire in deep gold, crowned by seven long rays like a sunrise that belongs to a whole lineage. A medallion in deep gold on black, ringed in beadwork, with the word NKEMBO on the banner.

The story of the design

What it means

Nkembo means glory in Lingala. In the album Kimuntu (Bana Bilaka World Sound), Flame No. 07 names the state of radiance: what shines from you when your roots hold, the brightness a family passes down further than any inheritance. The seven rays are the light going outward; the flame is the source that never left home. Word note: common Lingala usage; the twelve flames and their numbering are the creation of the album Kimuntu.

Two versions

Printed: the medallion is printed directly on the fabric. It takes the look of embroidery, but it is a flat print: no relief, no thread. Made to order, dispatched in 2 to 5 working days.

Embroidered front: the same medallion stitched in thread on the front, about 20 cm wide, by our embroidery workshop in the United Kingdom. Made to order, dispatched within 15 working days, then 3 to 7 days delivery in the UK (7 to 15 days elsewhere).

Stanley/Stella Creator 2.0, 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton (GOTS-certified fabric), 180 gsm single jersey, fabric washed. Colour: Black. Medium unisex fit, true to size.

Printed version delivered to the United States: Stanley/Stella Crafter, 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton, 155 gsm, regular fit, printed in Florida (size 3XL is printed in England on the Creator 2.0).
